EMDC’s new location and expanded staff
The Eastern Maine Development Center (EMDC) in Machias has relocated to the Career Center (53 Prescott Drive, near the Hannaford Shopping Plaza). Samantha Giasson has joined the team to administer the National Farmworker Jobs Program. Samantha will be working in both the Hancock and Washington County offices. Connect with EMDC staff for employment and training assistance to eligible individuals in EMDC’s five county service area. A New Wave of Caregivers: Men
“When you hear the word “caregiver,” what image comes to mind?
Most likely it is a woman in her 40s — someone tucking her children in with a phone call to her aging mother before bed. And in fact, this isn’t inaccurate. But did you know that of the 40 million family caregivers in America, nearly half of them are men?
According to Jean Accius of AARP, these once invisible men are starting to ‘come out’ publicly. Dr. Accius has written: ‘They are husbands taking care of their spouses or partners, sons taking care of Mom or Dad, friends taking care of neighbors. These men are breaking stereotypes and upending misconceptions.'”

Helping Hands with Heart Seminar
October 9, 2019
Helping Hands with Heart/The Maine Highlands Investment Partnership (MHIP) is offering this professional developmental seminar for its members and colleagues, including folks who have supported some of our activities the past year, focusing on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and how we develop Resilience in others. Sue Mackey Andrews will facilitate this session. Our region is 2nd in the State with higher than average ACEs reports from our high school students. We will discuss what ACEs are, how they influence brain development and our health over the lifespan, behavior and what we can do as caring individuals to help to develop resilience in children, adults and communities. This session will be offered at The Commons from 11 am — 2:30 pm, at no cost to participants; a light luncheon will be provided. Register no later than Friday, October 4th!
Elder Abuse Awareness & Response Workshop

The Elder Abuse Institute of Maine, together with Next Step and the CCC, is hosting a free workshop from 1-5 pm at the Calais Congregational Church, 21 Calais Avenue. State Plan on Aging Listening Sessions
October 16, 2019 in Washington County
Every four years, the state is required to create a State Plan on Aging that specifies how federal and state funding will be used to address the needs of older Mainers. To inform the planning process, the Department of Health & Human Services is hosting a series of listening sessions across Maine. The MCOA urges you to share this information and to encourage people to participate in these conversations. They want to hear not only from older Mainers, but also from caregivers, providers, adults with disabilities, and other interested people. Please share this flyer with your boards, volunteers, staff, and friends. For Washington County residents, the listening session will be hosted by the University of Maine, Machias in the Performing Arts Center, 2–4 pm on October 16th.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s 2019

The Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern Maine Chapter is preparing for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s 2019 at Darling’s Waterfront on October 19th. For the second year in a row our team, Russ’s Angels, is participating in the walk – register here. The walk is the largest annual fundraising event held by this non-profit organization. The funds raised support all of Maine. Jackson Labs, located in Bar Harbor and Ellsworth, benefited from a large grant last year for their research with mice. Very promising results are being seen. There is hope on the horizon!
Inaugural Downeast Apple and Arts Day
October 19, 2019
Cobscook Community Learning Center (CCLC), in partnership with Healthy Acadia and with support from Maine Arts Commission, is hosting the inaugural Downeast Apple and Arts Day on Saturday, October 19, 2019, from 10 am — 4 pm. John Bunker, Maine’s legendary heirloom “apple whisperer,” will give the keynote address, with workshops and presentations by Todd Little-Siebold of College of the Atlantic and C.J. Walke and Laura Sieger of MOFGA. This event will be a celebration of Downeast heritage, featuring workshops on heirloom apples, fruit tree care, apple identification, and more. Do you have a grafted tree in your midst that you would like identified? Bring samples! Do you have surplus apples? Hand-cranked cider presses will be on hand. Enjoy live, local music with Kris Paprocki, Allie Talbot, Michael Giudilli, Alan Cook, Sepp Huber, and Sheila Unvala, as well as traditional handcrafts, including birchbark, basketry, beeswax, and beadwork. Local artists will offer demonstrations as well as their works for sale, and food will be available for purchase. Planned Giving: An Overview and Tales from the Trenches

The Maine Association of Non Profits is holding a training on October 23rd, 9 am-3 pm at the Machias Savings Bank Training Center, 1 Colonial Way, Machias. This full-day, interactive training will provide a thorough overview of the most common planned giving vehicles with an emphasis on bequests, beneficiary designations, and charitable gift annuities. Using several real-life examples, participants will examine how to build a successful planned giving program relevant to their organization and incorporate it into their existing development program. Free Family Harvest Meal
October 25, 2019
With help from our partners, the CCC is planning a free, nutritious meal for families with children who participate in Trick or Treat on Main Street this year. Help us offer children and families a (not too) spooky good time! We expect hundreds of children to visit businesses in downtown Machias on October 25th and would like to offer a free, hot meal in the Lee Pellon Center — the end of the trick-or-treating route, with a few simple activities for kids and a table for organizational materials. The meal hours will be 4 to 6 pm — just about supper time for most families. We will need help setting up, running activities, serving, and cleaning up after the event. CCC Vision Day 2019: Focus on Childcare

The Community Caring Collaborative invites you to Vision Day 2019 on December 4th from 9 am to 3 pm at Cobscook Community Learning Center. This is an opportunity for all members of the collaborative — service providers, administrators, educators, advocates, volunteers and community members — to bring ideas to the table that address a specific set of needs for Washington County residents. We do this every couple of years in the relaxed atmosphere of our favorite vision day venue — the CCLC — where creativity and dreaming big are encouraged. This year we’re focusing on childcare. Help us envision a Washington County where all childcare needs and wants are met. Dream of all the ways childcare in Washington County can support children, families, and the economy. It will take people with experience in all aspects of this equation (parents, child care providers/managers, policy makers, educators and workforce development experts) to fully tackle the issues, but we can start on December 4th and go from there. UMaine Extension to offer Cooking Matters for Parents
University of Maine Cooperative Extension will offer a free nutrition and cooking series for adults with children living at home. Lessons include nutrition information as well as making and sampling budget friendly recipes. Participants will receive ingredients to make a Cooking Matters recipe at home each week. This program will be offered Wednesdays, Sept. 18 through Oct. 23, 5–7 p.m. at the UMaine Extension Office located at 28 Center Street in Machias. Pre-registration is required. Dining with Diabetes Down East in Cherryfield Oct. 3–24
University of Maine Cooperative Extension will offer a free, four-week Dining with Diabetes Down East series beginning Thursday, Oct. 3, from 3–5 p.m., at Maine Seacoast Mission Weald Bethel Community Center, 7 Weald Bethel Lane, Cherryfield. Remaining dates are Oct.10, 17 and 24. The program complements medical care by teaching people with Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, along with their family members and caregivers, what they can do to help control blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. UMaine Extension registered dietitian and nutritionist Alan Majka will provide presentations, lead discussions and demonstrate preparation of nutritious recipes that participants can sample. This free class is limited to 20 participants; pre-registration is required. Register online. Caregivers Facebook Group
The CCC is launching a private facebook group for caregivers in Washington County – professional caregivers like RNs and CNAs, and informal caregivers like family members providing care for a spouse, parent, specials needs child, sibling or the neighbor across the street. Our goal is for this group to provide a platform for caregivers to talk to each other, ask questions, offer solutions based on experience with similar challenges, and point to helpful resources. Refuge Recovery
The Downeast Recovery Supports Center is now hosting weekly meetings of Refuge Recovery, a Buddhist-inspired approach to recovery from addiction. Meetings are on Tuesdays from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Hepatitis C Support Group
Health Equity Alliance has begun a Hepatitis C support group at the Downeast Machias Recovery Center. They also offer a syringe exchange and FREE HIV and HEPC testing. Downeast MAT Expansion ECHO
Healthy Acadia in collaboration with Qualidigm (formerly Maine Quality Counts) invites you to join a local effort to respond to Maine’s opioid epidemic through education, skill-building, and networking for Downeast clinicians. The Downeast MAT Expansion ECHO program seeks to build local capacity to treat individuals who are struggling with OUDs across Hancock and Washington Counties by offering free education, skill building, and networking to clinicians and the practices they work in. Healthy Acadia, working closely with many key community partners, is offering a two-part Project ECHO program over the coming year. Meetings on the 4th Friday of each month at 3 PM at the Calais United Methodist Church, 849 Main St. (downstairs parlor), in Calais. Resource Advocate/Social Worker
Downeast Community Partners is hiring for the full-time position of Resource Advocate. This person will work with individuals and families who are economically vulnerable to provide assistance and support in managing the challenges they are experiencing. The position will include both short-term assistance with immediate needs as well as ongoing work with more long-term goals; the overall goal being to help people improve their quality of life and ultimately move out of poverty. This will mean working on smaller goals in many different areas of life depending on the needs. Washington County Adult Education is seeking to fill a part-time Adult Education Director position and part-time Literacy/ELL Instructor position that are being combined into a full-time position if a suitable candidate is found. Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree and a wiliness to become state certified as an assistant adult education director. Professional Development costs will be provided. Assists the director in oversite of programs adult basic education, high school completion, college transitions, vocational, academic and career advising, and other programs deemed appropriate for communities. This is a county program, so travel is required at times. Mileage or a gas card is provided. The assistant director works director to support efforts to meet mission, vision and goals. The portion of the position as a literacy/ELL instructor will work with immigrant populations, college students and other adults who need to acquire the English language or increase their literacy skills.
