Substance Use and its Impacts: supporting recovery across communities, a core CCC training developed for Family Futures Downeast Partners, but open to all CCC partner staff. Abby Frutchey, MSW, LADC, CCS, will be presenting this training at the beautiful facilities of Cobscook Institute on September 28th. Topics include a review of substance use disorders, bias, the change process, building resiliency through strengths-based approaches, the importance of person-centered language; and expanding knowledge of community resources.

Turkey-A-Thon
Friday, October 7th, WQDY Classic Hits and Healthy Acadia are so excited about the 18th Annual Turkey-A-Thon event, that we can’t stop telling folks! Watch out for turkey, vegetable and tutu clad volunteers standing by the side of the road at any of our seven locations. Last year we raised over $39,000 for our local food security organizations. Maybe we can exceed this with your support! We are grateful to all of the volunteers and donors that make Turkey-A-Thon such a huge Washington County success story. I work closely with food security organizations in this region and I can assure you that each one is incredibly grateful to receive the proceeds of this event. You make a difference. If you have never been involved with the event before, every dollar donated goes straight to Washington County food security organizations. It is so easy and fun to participate. Here are at least four ways that you can be a part of the day:
- Volunteer on the day of the event for an hour or more at any one of our great locations. Please register HERE.
- Stop in at any one of the seven locations and give a donation. Your business name will be shared on the air!
- Call into the radio station on the day of the event to CHALLENGE other businesses or organizations to donate!
- Send a donation directly to Jeff Demmons via Venmo.
Back to Basics: Building Routines for Success
University of Maine Cooperative Extension opens a free six-session online educational series for parents and caregivers Oct. 4 from 1–2:30 p.m. Additional sessions are scheduled Oct. 11, 18, 25 and Nov. 1. “Back to Basics: Building Routines for Success” will focus on managing daily household tasks; meal planning and budgeting; learning to live with others; finding work and managing money; and coping with everyday stress. Each session includes time for questions. The series is free; registration is required. Register on the program webpage for one or more sessions to participate. Caregiving Isn’t ‘Women’s Work’
Whether you’re talking about the mental load — aka invisible labor like planning and scheduling all the things on any given family member’s agenda — or literal loads of laundry and dishes, a majority of women (59%) say they’re still shouldering more than their spouse or partner, according to an October 2020 Pew Research analysis. It’s an everyday reality that echoes an antiquated but deeply embedded social belief that child care, senior care and care for the sick is “women’s work.” Read article.
