Meghan Duff Reads Aloud at Porter Memorial Library
Local author and associate professor at University of Maine in Machias (UMM), Meghan Duff, will read aloud from her new children’s book “How Are You, Verity?” on Thursday, August 31st, 11 am at Porter Memorial Library. This is an event for children and their caregivers, and will take place outside if the weather is favorable. Admission is free. See press release for more information.

DNA, Strawberries and You
University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H Science Fridays will offer DNA, Strawberries and You. This session will take place on Friday, August 18 from 2-4 pm at the Washington County Extension office located on the campus of UMaine Machias, 116 O’Brien Avenue in Machias. Youth participants ages 9-12 will extract DNA from strawberries and make snacks featuring strawberries. The event is free and limited to 12 participants; registration is required. Hire-A-Vet Campaign 2023
Maine Department of Labor’s (DOL) Hire-A-Vet Campaign for 2023 kicks off with its first event this month. The campaign’s goal is to help at least 100 Maine employers hire at least 100 veterans within 100 days. The first of four events will be held at the Augusta Civic Center on Aug. 17, and includes a campaign opening ceremony and the traditional in-person hiring event. The remaining in-person events will be held on Sept. 21 at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor; on Oct. 19 at The Point in South Portland; and on Nov. 9 at the Auburn Mall. Registration for employers is still open. Participating employers can register for one or multiple events, and must be registered with Maine JobLink and have at least one active job posted to account on the day of the event. While the events are veteran-focused, all events are open to all job seekers. For more information about this month’s event or future events, visit the Maine Career Center’s website.
Head Harbor Boat Trip
Cobscook Institute is opening up 12 spots for the Sunday Boat Trip to Head Harbor on August 20th. This is part of their annual Downeast Migration Birding Festival. Registration and details here.
Prevention Council at Wild Blueberry Festival
The Prevention Council will be at the annual Machias Wild Blueberry Festival August 19th & 20th, providing a children’s play area, baby changing and feeding station (next to the food court in the Church Commons). They will also be offering a free Front Porch Project training at 11 am and 1 pm at the Prevention Council booth. Free snacks and goodies will be provided to all training participants.
