Managing School Anxiety

Welcome ‘23-‘24 school year! The GEAR Parent Network has assembled a one-sheet with tips on how to help your child manage anxiety with school. Also, be sure to visit our website and register for our new workshop, “Defusing Challenging Behaviors: How to Effectively De-Escalate Your Child” being held September 21, 2023 from 10-12 pm. Suicide Prevention & Awareness Events

September is National Suicide Prevention & Awareness month, and UMaine Machias has events planned all month long, including a support tree on College Hill, a presentation and discussion on September 13th, and the “Out of the Darkness Walk” on September 20th.  See flyer for details.

The Grief Journey of the Dementia Caregiver

Join HopeHealth Hospice & Palliative Care on October 17th from 12 – 1 pm for an online session that will will discuss how grief changes for dementia caregivers at each stage of the disease—from anticipatory grief to bereavement. Identifying the caregiver’s greatest area of stress will also be a part of the discussion.  This presentation is part of a series designed to provide education, support, and resources for those caring for loved ones living with dementia. Trees for HOPE Festival

The Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center is thrilled to share some exciting news! It’s not too early to start thinking about donating a themed Christmas tree for the 2023 Trees for HOPE Festival. This year’s festival will take place on Saturday, December 16th from 9 am to 7 pm and on Sunday, December 17th from 9 am to 2 pm at a location to be determined within Ellsworth, ME. We hope you’ll consider donating a tree and/or attending and purchasing raffle tickets.  Proceeds from the 2023 Trees for Hope Festival will benefit the Downeast Cancer Patient Navigation Program, a collaborative effort of the Beth C. Maine Equal Justice Hiring 2 Positions

SAMHSA has a new resource: Best Practices for Successful Reentry From Criminal Justice Settings for People Living With Mental Health Conditions and/or Substance Use Disorders, that examines the types of interventions that support successful reentry for adults with mental health conditions and/or substance use disorders who are leaving jail/prison.


Cooperative Extension Needs Assessment

To help with future planning for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, we have partnered with the UF/IFAS Center for Public Issues Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (PIE Center) to collect data to understand the needs of our clients, participants, employees, and partners.  The online Statewide Community Needs Assessment Data Collection portal is live and can be accessed using this link until September 17th.  Please visit the website for more information on the UMaine Extension Needs Assessment process.
